Eyeglasses on my Kitchen Counter

This image is part of my series Seeing in Stillness which explores the often missed beauty in the ordinary and mundane.

A quiet moment in my kitchen, listening to my kettle hiss, sputter, then sing. I walk towards it, thinking about the warm cup of tea I had been looking forward to all afternoon. Matcha green tea, a buzz to get me through the afternoon doldrums.

The harsh afternoon light streams through my windows like it does every afternoon. I pause, feeling the warmth on my face, savoring it. I notice, just for a moment, my eyeglasses resting on my kitchen counter surrounded with golden light and framed by dark shadows.

My face breaks into a smile. A mundane moment on an ordinary afternoon momentarily transformed into a mesmerizing moment of beauty. A fleeting moment of quiet delight.

I reach for my camera and take the shot.

That quiet pause between thoughts, that tiny bit of space between actions, allows for so many possibilities. In this instance, a magical moment of light, shadow and reflections etched in my kitchen counter.

If you took a moment to pause and rest in stillness, what would arise for you?

The photograph “Eyeglasses on my Kitchen Counter” was an official selection for Denver’s Month of Photography and displayed at the Cube.

Gear: Shot with Fujifilm x-t2 and the Fujifilm xf35mm f2 lens.
